WEEK 1 (5/04/2019)
On Friday at 9AM, we had our first class as whole together with semester 2, 3 & 4. In this class we were introduced and briefed about the community project. We were then put into groups to carry out the project. The whole semester 6 was specifically put in charge of the sponsorship because the reason was that have already gained industrial experience and has established networking with people in the industry. In the sponsorship group, each of us were allocated to 5 different tasks. The tasks are categorized into finance, furniture, books, stationary and paint. I volunteerily chose to be assigned to paint group along with my friends, Patrick & Janson.

The community service project is in collaboration with Yayasan SALAM with the objective to renovate an existing library for one of the indigenous community in Serendah.
WEEK 2 (8/04/19 - 12/04/19)
In this week, our class had another meeting but this time it was only our semester. In this meeting we discussed on the potential companies we can approach to request for sponsorship. Mr.Edwin, passed us an official request for sponsorship letter for us to send out to companies. The paint group then listed out the potential companies we can reach out and started a group Whatsapp chat to discuss our progression.
WEEK 3 (15/04/19 - 19/04/19)
Within this week, everyone started to email out the request for sponsorship to their potential companies. I emailed out the request to Murobond Paints, Graphenstone, Dulux and Mil design (my internship company). There was no feedback from Murobond and Graphenstone whereas Dulux requested for the official letter to be sent to them. However, by the end of the week they did not come back with any reply. On the other hand, I emailed my boss from my previous internship company. Over the weekend they agreed to sponsor rm200 of funds towards our project. the funds will be issued by cheque in which I would have to go collect from their office

WEEK 4: presentation - PLANNING (PROPOSAL & BUDGET)
This week we had to present our progression so far and what is the next action to be taken for the upcoming weeks.

To reflect upon the progress the paint have made so far, overall it was quite a challenge for us to secure a sponsorship. It was day after day, emails after emails of following up based on the matter. And like others, we too experience rejection from companies. Although it was very discouraging, we still kept on contacting other companies. Finally our efforts were paid off! On the morning before our presentation, Kansai Paints has agreed to sponsor their paints for our project. This was all thanks to our member Patrick for going the extra length and asking for contacts from various people.
Now that we have secured a company, the next step would be confirming the colours based on the chosen design to be sent to Kansai for them to calculate the amount of paint buckets needed. At the same time, the paint team will continue to reach out to companies for sponsorships as we progress.

WEEK 5 (22/04/2019 - 26/04/2019)
In this week there was not much progress as we had to wait for the design group to finalize their design and colour scheme. In the mean time, the paint group tried to help out other groups to source for books, stationary and furniture that can be donated for the project. By the end of the week, the design team finally came back to us with the finalize design and colours for us to send to Kansai Paint for number of paint cans per colour.
WEEK 6 (29/04/2019 - 3/05/2019)
After the design team gave us confirmation on the designs, Patrick (group member) emailed it out to Kansai Paints for them to provide us with the numbers. However, their feedback was for us to provide the overall measurements of the walls for each colour so they could calculate the number of cans. The calculations part was handled by Patrick where he consulted Ms.Norji (lecturer) for guidance on how to calculate.

As for me, I went out to look for cheap stationaries and asked around friends or colleagues if they would like to contribute to the project. At this point of time, since the paint group has secured a sponsorship from the paint company, our progression rate is at 80%, near to completion. Therefore, we try to aid other groups if they need any help.

Also, I have collected the RM200 from Mil Design on 30/4/2019 issued under Jordan's name (Yeo Zi Qing).

WEEK 7 (6/05/2019 - 10/05/2019)
During our weekly meeting, all of the groups came together to update everyone on the progress so far. For paint group, we were advised, to compile the whole project into slides that would be sent out to Kansai Paints for their record.

On the other hand, after many weeks of chasing after companies, Nippon Paints came back to us and has agreed to sponsor their paints. However, since we have secured a paint company, we decided to put it on hold at the moment in case Kansai decides to not fully sponsor their paints. This acts as our backup plan.

On the other hand, we were notified to design a thank you gift to be sent out to all the sponsors as a token of appreciation. After a small discussion, the paint group decided to design a framed photo/postcard with all of us on launch day and a "Thank You" message at the back. We were planning to sent it along with some chocolates of goodies. I was out in charge of designing the gift and it will be proposed in next week's presentation

WEEK 8 (13/05/2019 - 17/05/2019)
At this point of time, all team had a good amount of progression on their sponsored item and donated collection. As for paint group, we have already set the collection date for the paints from Kansai Paints. However, the collection has to be made on two seperate days as half of the paints are to be mixed on a later date. The class had a group discussion and powerpoint presentation to inform the rest on the progress thus far.
As I for my part, I came out with a design proposal for the thank you gift to be given to the sponsors who had kindly contributed to this project. 3 designs of the postcards were proposed during the meeting and many prefer the first option with a different colour option. The postcards was to be sent along with some chocolates or any type of delicacy to the sponsors.
WEEK 9 (20/05/2019 - 24/05/2019)
Within this week, all paints were collected on two separate days for both interior and exterior walls together with the base coat. The collection was nearby Sunway University so it was easily accessible from Taylor's University.
The stationary group required some assistance on the sortation of the crayons they had received from a Sri KL teacher. I help out on peeling off the paper covers on the crayons and placed them in groups according to the colours. Once sorted, the crayons are melted and poured into molds for it to be usable again. The molding part was done solely by the stationary team as it was done at a later time. In total, we peeled off about two bags worth of crayons.

WEEK 10 (27/05/2019 - 31/05/2019)
At this point of time, the paint team is considered to have completed our sponsorship duties on sourcing out paint donations and funds donation. For the oncoming weeks until launch we aim to help out other groups in need of extra helping hands.
RAYA BREAK : (3/06/2019 - 7/06/2019)
WEEK 11 (10/06/2019 - 15/06/2019)
It is finally the on site execution day. 8 students from BIA Semester 6 volunteered to go to site and assemble the furnitures bought from Ikea. Other teams were responsible for their respective areas. In total, we had to assemble 20 chairs, 6 small stools, 4 normal tables, 2 low tables, 6 low cabinets and 6 tall cabinets.
We arrived at around 10:30am and began assembling the chairs first. The cabinets took the longest as the assembling process was more complicated. We lacked proper tools to build it so we had to borrow other teams for extras. In the end, the process of assembling took about 5 hours. By 5pm, we transported all the furnitures inside while waiting for the beanbags to arrive.

WEEK 12 : launch day [22/06/2019)
reflection
To reflect upon this experience, it has been a fun journey working together with the our juniors. This experience has been an eye opener. Not only did we get to help the orang asli community but we also had a chance to manage a renovation project. Such opportunities only comes by once in a while. Although my job scope was only to source out for paint sponsor, I took the initiative to lend a helping hand to other groups in need of extra hands. Even with working experience in the architecture industry, the knowledge gained on this project can only be attained during our studies.
If there was one downside to this project, that would be the miscommunication with the lower semesters as it is their first time being involve in a renovation project. I hope in the future, the library would aid the orang asli kids and the community in preparation for the modern society and help them grow into a better person. The knowledge, skills and connection gained during the process will be helpful in the future for my studies and the working life.
